“A new study from the European Space Agency showed that the worst type of solar storm could cause catastrophic damage in orbit and on the ground. Don't call it alarmism, either — the last time such an event hit Earth was less than two centuries ago. The historical event in question is called the Carrington Event, and it caused major damage to telecoms stations and power grids worldwide. That, though, was more than a century before the first satellites hit orbit; today, the impact could be much, much more devastating.”
