Two people can go through the exact same situation and have completely different reactions. Not slightly different. Completely different.
I’ve seen this pattern again and again across thousands of brain scans.
So we wanted to understand why.
In one of our studies, we looked at blood flow and activity across the brain.
What we saw was clear.
Female brains showed more activity in areas tied to emotional processing, empathy, and awareness.
We also saw differences in key brain structures.
The prefrontal cortex, which is involved in judgment and decision-making, tends to be stronger in women.
And a part of the brain called the corpus callosum, which connects the two hemispheres, tends to be larger, giving women greater access to both sides of their brain at the same time.
And once you see that, a lot of things start to make sense.
- Why women rely more on intuition and why that intuition is often right
- Why one person wants to talk it through and the other just wants to move on
- Why one replays a conversation and the other forgets it even happened
I hear versions of this every day.
And once you see this, you stop trying to force your brain to work like someone else’s.
I find it fascinating. I think you will, too.
To your brain health,
Daniel G. Amen, MD
